FROM PARIS TO SEVILLE: A CAPTIVATING DIALOGUEWITH TRADITIONAL ANDALUSIAN SAVOIR-FAIRE

ABANICOS CARBONELL

The fan is a somewhat magical item, an integral part of the Spanish collective imagination. At once functional, decorative and performative, it was brought to Spain by the earliest sailors and adventurers coming fromChina, taking root in the gestures and attitude of Sevillian women.

The Abanicos Carbonell atelier has beenproducing exceptional pieces in Valencia for over two hundred years.

For the 2023 Dior cruise collection,it created fans made of lace, a material that is closely connected to Iberian savoir-faire, uniting NorthernEurope with Venice (Burano) in an interplay of cross references.

ORFEBRERÍA RAMOSF

For this collection, Maria Grazia Chiuri chose to collaborate with Orfebrería Ramos, which uses traditionalmetalworking techniques to craft and decorate religious ceremonial objects.

A comprehensive line of jewelrywas developed with Orfebrería Ramos on the theme of the Granville rose, as a tribute to Monsieur Dior.

FERNÁNDEZ Y ROCHE

For this collection, Maria Grazia Chiuri decided to reinterpret two classic hat shapes – emblematic of thehorse-riding wardrobe – produced by the Fernández y Roche atelier.

One is made of felt and the other ofstraw, both decorated with iconic Dior details. The inspiration for this collaboration came from a photo ofJackie Kennedy on horseback with the Duchess of Alba in riding outfits, together wearing these headpieces.

DANIEL LÓPEZ-OBRERO CARMONA

To reinterpret the Cordoba leather tradition, which combines carving and painting techniques, MariaGrazia Chiuri initiated a collaboration between the artist Pietro Ruffo and the artisan Daniel López-ObreroCarmona.

The latter translated the works made by the Roman designer for thedéfiléonto several paintedleather panels covering a trunk designed to house Andalusian saddles and horse-riding equipment. The artisan’s works have also been used to decorate a series of bags in the collection.

JAVIER MENACHO GUISADO

Around Seville, leather craftsmanship has a strong connection with the equestrian world, every elementof the discipline influencing the techniques and details.

For the 2023 Dior cruise collection, Maria GraziaChiuri collaborated with Javier Menacho Guisado to reinvent the DiorSaddlebag using special leatherembroidery methods.

MARÍA JOSÉ SÁNCHEZ ESPINAR

Three generations of women work on the production of Manila shawls in the María José Espinar atelier. This garment sums up the spirit of the collection, with its history of travel(moving objects)and uprooting(displacement). Indeed, the embroidery technique it displays came from China, with the shawls importedto Seville in the seventeenth century via the Philippines (Manila).

It has become one of the most emblematicSpanish accessories, notably worn by the women painted by Goya and Velázquez. From Seville, it spreadto Latin America, demonstrating how artisanship is a global language with the power to connect far-awaycultures and places. The atelier has developed a series of traditionally embroidered shawls with iconicDior details.

JESÚS ROSADO

Embroidery plays a key role in all the collections designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri, fascinated as she isby a variety of techniques which – from Italy to India, from Paris to Seville – compose a global language.

The Jesús Rosado atelier only works with gold and silver yarns to embroider the fabrics used to dress theMadonnas in religious processions or worn for liturgical rites. The essence of rituals and the significance of community are the fundamental elements of thisdéfilé.

During a visit, Maria Grazia Chiuri was struck by the atelier’s setup, similar as it is to that of a coutureworkshop. The work is done with a very high level of craftsmanship and savoir-faire. For this 2023 Dior cruisecollection, they reinterpreted a version of the Barjacket and Lady Dior with three-dimensional embroideryindicating a bas-relief inspiration
