The FAMED FEMALE COUNTERPART TO THE ICONIc AVENTUS, AVENTUS FOR HER

IS A FLORAL, CRISP FRAGRANCE FROM THE HOUSE OF CREED.

SEPTEMBER 2021

Inspired by their 250-year-old female patronage, the House of Creed are delighted to present Aventus for Her. A floral and crisp fragrance, which is the feminine counterpart to the iconic male fragrance Aventus.

A short walk from Kyoto’s railway station, deep in the archives of the Kyoto Costume Institute, you’ll find an example of exquisite bespoke tailoring, made in London around 150 years ago, that has helped change the lives of women around the globe. Hand-stitched in a thick woollen fabric, this Henry Creed riding habit was made for one of the tailor’s well-heeled clients, who included aristocrats and royalty. It was based on outfits first created for Empress Eugénie of France, consort of Napoleon III – whose striking figure suited the name given to her riding habit, Amazone, after the warrior women of Greek legend - as well as Queen Victoria’s more prosaic equestrian attire.

As men’s tailoring developed so too did women’s riding clothes, with the woollen cloth associated with men’s suiting crossing over into the female wardrobes. It was indeed the Creed family that celebrated the empowerment of women by liberating them with the encouragement of wearing trousers. A powerful statement for women at the time who had always had fashion over function when it came to sports such as horse-riding.

The word ‘habit’ comes from the old French abit meaning clothing. But the costume Amazone, preferred by Empress Eugeń ie, conjures up visions of emancipated women – sexual, predatory and powerful, a perfect foundation for the 2016 iconic fragrance Aventus for her, which celebrates the strong female patronage of the House of Creed archives.

Re-imagined for 2021, The House of Creed asked British designers Matthew Cunnington and John Sanderson of Cunnington and Sanderson, to craft a riding habit based on Henry Creed’s original design. With fabrics sourced from Linton Tweed Mill (a woollen mill the Creed family used for years) the new ‘Amazone’ was born, a modern deconstructed interpretation of the original riding habit which links so closely to this fresh and floral fragrance.
